What is a smart electrical panel

What Is a Smart Electrical Panel?

A smart electrical panel performs the essential functions of a traditional breaker panel while adding digital energy monitoring, connected controls and, in some systems, automatic electrical load management.

Depending on the manufacturer, model and system configuration, a smart panel may provide:

  • Circuit-level electricity monitoring
  • Real-time household energy information
  • Remote circuit controls
  • App-based system access
  • Adjustable circuit priorities
  • Automated electrical load management
  • Solar-production visibility
  • Battery-storage integration
  • Backup-power prioritization
  • EV-charging controls
  • Alerts and energy-use insights
  • Support for future home-electrification projects

A traditional electrical panel distributes electricity and protects circuits through breakers. A smart panel adds a layer of information and control that can help homeowners understand where electricity is being used and how major loads interact.

Not every smart panel provides every feature. Solar, battery, EV and HVAC compatibility must be confirmed for the specific products being considered.

Control Supported Circuits Remotely

Some smart panels allow supported circuits to be monitored or switched through a mobile application.

Possible uses include:

  • Turning selected circuits on or off
  • Checking whether a major appliance is operating
  • Reviewing energy use by circuit
  • Adjusting backup-power priorities
  • Managing EV charging
  • Monitoring solar or battery activity
  • Receiving system notifications

Remote functionality depends on the panel, internet access, system configuration and connected equipment.

Smart Electrical Panel Installation and Upgrades

Benefits of a Smart Electrical Panel Upgrade

See Where Your Electricity Is Going

A standard utility bill shows how much electricity the entire property used during a billing period. It usually does not explain how much was consumed by heating, cooling, water heating, vehicle charging or individual household circuits.

Circuit-level monitoring can help homeowners identify:

This information does not guarantee lower bills. It gives homeowners better data for making informed energy decisions.

Manage major electrical loads

Manage Major Electrical Loads

Some smart panels can temporarily reduce or interrupt selected loads when the home approaches a configured electrical limit.

For example, the system might briefly manage an EV charger or water heater while the heat pump and other equipment are operating. When demand decreases, the managed circuit can return to normal operation.

SPAN’s PowerUp system is one example of this type of energy management. It monitors total demand against a configured setpoint and manages eligible circuits according to homeowner-selected priorities. SPAN states that these events generally last only a few minutes when they occur.

Load management must be professionally designed and configured. Essential circuits should not be treated the same as flexible loads such as vehicle charging or tank-type water heating.

Prioritize Backup Power

When paired with compatible battery-storage equipment, certain smart panels can allow homeowners to choose which rooms or appliances receive power during an outage.

A homeowner might prioritize:

Larger loads can use stored energy quickly, so backup planning should account for battery capacity, inverter output, equipment startup demand and the expected duration of an outage.

SPAN states that compatible configurations can allow homeowners to change which circuits receive battery power during outages.

Smart Electrical Panel vs. Standard Panel Upgrade

A standard electrical panel replacement may be the correct solution when the primary goal is to replace outdated equipment, create additional circuit spaces or correct an electrical condition.

A smart panel may be appropriate when the homeowner also wants detailed monitoring, load management, remote control or integration with other energy systems.

For Albuquerque homeowners planning a heat pump, EV charger, solar panels, battery storage, or other home electrification upgrades, a smart panel may provide greater visibility and flexibility than a conventional panel replacement.

Capability

Standard Electrical Panel

Smart Electrical Panel

Circuit protection Yes Yes
Electrical distribution Yes Yes
Additional breaker capacity❓ Depends on model and design❓ Depends on model and design
Circuit-level energy monitoring❌ Normally not included Commonly available
Remote circuit controls❌ Normally unavailable Available on supported systems
Automatic load management❓ Separate equipment may be required Available with certain panels
Solar-energy visibility❌ Usually requires separate monitoring May be integrated
Battery-backup priorities❌ Often uses a separate critical-load panel May be adjustable through an app
EV-charging management❌ Usually separate Available with certain systems
Mobile application❌ No Commonly available
Energy-use insights❓ Limited Available on supported systems

A smart panel is not automatically safer or more electrically capable simply because it is connected. Panel ratings, circuit protection, wiring, installation quality, permits and inspections still matter.

Breaker Space and Service Capacity Are Not the Same

An empty breaker position does not prove that the electrical service can safely support another large load.

Similarly, a panel with no open spaces does not always mean the utility service must be enlarged. In some cases, an electrician may be able to install a larger panel, reorganize circuits, use approved equipment or apply load-management technology while retaining the existing service.

A professional electrical load calculation should guide the recommendation.

Our Smart Electrical Panel Planning Process

Discuss Your Current and Future Plans

We begin by identifying what you want to install now and what you may add later.

That may include:

  • A heat pump
  • Ductless mini splits
  • A heat-pump water heater
  • An EV charger
  • Solar panels
  • Battery storage
  • +More

Review the Existing HVAC System

We evaluate the home’s current heating and cooling equipment, comfort concerns, ductwork and replacement goals.

This helps determine the likely electrical requirements of the proposed HVAC system.

Review the Existing Electrical Infrastructure

The project may require an evaluation of:

  • Main-service rating
  • Panel rating
  • Breaker spaces
  • Existing equipment
  • Proposed loads
  • Meter and panel location
  • Utility requirements
  • Installation access

Calculate the Proposed Loads

The project team should determine how the heat pump, water heater, EV charger and other proposed appliances affect the home’s calculated electrical demand.

Compare Available Solutions

Depending on the findings, options may include:

  • Retaining the existing panel
  • Adding dedicated circuits
  • Replacing the panel
  • Increasing panel capacity
  • Upgrading utility service
  • Installing an approved load-management device
  • Installing a smart electrical panel

Confirm Equipment Compatibility

Smart panels must be checked against the proposed:

  • Heat-pump equipment
  • Thermostats and controls
  • EV charger
  • Solar inverter
  • Battery system
  • Communications platform

Define Permitting and Installation Scope

The proposal should identify:

  • HVAC work
  • Electrical work
  • Utility involvement
  • Permits
  • Inspections
  • Equipment setup
  • App configuration
  • Owner orientation

Test and Commission the System

After installation, the completed project should be tested to confirm that the HVAC, electrical equipment and applicable smart-panel functions operate as intended.

Frequently Asked Questions About Smart Electrical Panels

What is a smart electrical panel?

A smart electrical panel distributes electricity and protects household circuits like a conventional panel while adding features such as circuit-level monitoring, app-based controls and, in some systems, automated load management.

How is a smart panel different from a regular electrical panel?

A regular panel primarily distributes electricity and protects circuits through breakers. A smart panel may also provide energy-use data, remote circuit control, load prioritization, solar and battery visibility, and integration with supported home-energy equipment.

Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel before installing a heat pump?

Not always. The answer depends on the existing service, panel condition, available capacity, proposed heat-pump requirements, supplemental heating and other household loads. A professional evaluation and load calculation should guide the decision.

Can a smart panel prevent the need for a 200-amp service upgrade?

It may help some homes retain their existing utility-service capacity by managing selected high-demand appliances. It cannot create additional electrical capacity, and it will not eliminate a service upgrade when the existing infrastructure is inadequate.

Can I keep a 100-amp service in an all-electric home?

Some homes may be able to support substantial electrification on a 100-amp service through efficient equipment and professionally designed load management. Other homes will need a larger service. The decision depends on the complete electrical load calculation and applicable requirements.

Can a smart panel monitor individual appliances?

Smart panels typically monitor electricity by circuit. A dedicated circuit may correspond closely to one appliance, while a shared circuit may contain multiple devices. The level of appliance-specific information depends on the wiring and monitoring system.

Can I control circuits from my phone?

Certain smart panels allow supported circuits to be switched or prioritized through a mobile application. Internet access, system configuration and manufacturer restrictions may apply.

Does a smart electrical panel work with rooftop solar?

Many smart panels are designed to work with solar-energy systems, but compatibility varies by panel model, inverter, meter configuration and overall system design. Compatibility should be confirmed before purchasing equipment.

Can a smart panel manage battery-backup circuits?

Compatible panels may allow homeowners to select or reprioritize circuits during an outage. Battery and inverter capacity still determine how much equipment can operate and for how long.

Do I need an electrical panel upgrade for a Level 2 EV charger?

Not necessarily. The charger rating, existing electrical demand, service capacity and desired charging speed all affect the decision. Load management may provide another option in some homes.

Does installing a subpanel increase the power available to my home?

No. A subpanel can provide additional circuit positions and distribute electricity to another area, but it does not increase the capacity of the utility service supplying the property.

After 17 years of dealing with evaporative coolers, we decided to switch to a more efficient type of system. We interviewed three HVAC dealers in Albuquerque and chose to engage the services of Nespolo. We felt that Robert Pallulat, the owner, provided the most clear, concise information about our options. He promptly delivered complete well documented estimates for each option. We felt confident that Robert and his team would do the best job for our needs. We chose to have mini-splits installed throughout our home to provide cooling in summer and heat in winter. Robert’s team was well organized and prompt. They removed the evaporative coolers for us and took care of donating them to the nonprofit we preferred. The Nespolo team was respectful and careful throughout the entire installation. They often stayed late and always cleaned up after themselves. The installation went smoothly and the results have been excellent. In this summer of record-breaking heat, we have stayed cool and comfortable. I highly recommend this company to anyone who is looking to install HVAC equipment. Thank you Nespolo!

My Daikin multi-zone minisplit had stopped working entirely (no air, no nothing) in the height of summer. Some other HVAC guys had said it couldn't be fixed. Ed & Derek at Nespolo found the problem and got it fixed, the same day, at a fair price. While they were here, by chance my other minisplit started dripping water, so they found the busted drain pipe and fixed that too. Great communication throughout, with them and with the owner. Top notch!

To say our job was average was an UNDERSTATEMENT!!! The builder had installed a WAY substandard system and due to the design of the house there was really no way to correct the basic design flaws. Robert listened and understood the issues we faced and offered a great solution!!! A 6 Zone Mini-Split Cold Climate Heat pump (2 outside units). The installation was not easy, but the whole crew (Ken, Richardo, Alex and Walter) did an OUTSTANDING job. They were punctual and cleaned up after themselves. They took the time to answer all our questions (given the horrible experience with the builder) and adapted to any changes we requested. Prior to picking Nespolo, I had 4 other big local companies come out. The first thing I told all of them was that we DID NOT want a gas furnace due to Propane costs. All the other companies included a propane furnace in their proposals. Nespolo definitely listened and gave us a WONDERFUL solution!!!
